I have used a .243 for deer for about 15 years. I gut shot one and lost it, otherwise there was not a problem with it. I always used Remington Core-lokt bullets. Since a 6mm is almost identical to a .243 obviously anyone that thinks the 6mm is enough of a step up to make a difference is biased against the .243. A .243 might be a little light for hogs, but I think with a premium bullet, it would work if you hit them in the right spot.
