Should there even be a popular presidential election?

The constitution as written envisioned a popularly elected House to protect the people. The Senate elected by state lagslatures to protect states rights. The president was to be elected by electors chosen by each state equal to the number of the states repersentatives and senators. The electors were free to vote for whomever they wanted, with the House of repersentives voting if no candidate recieved a majority of the electors votes. What do we have today, polictical primaries, party control over everything preventing an independent ever having a real chance. It should go back to the original vision of the constitution. removing the admendment to popularly elect senators, and use the electolal collage to the purpose for which it was written, instead of the joke it has become. The constitution never envisoned a popular vote for president and I agree their shouldnt be.
